Something Old Something New

I feel like this title applies to so many projects in our home. Bringing life to old spaces and making them "new"again has been my intention on every piece that we touch in our home. A little back story, if you're new around here", we bought a 1959 ranch about 10 years ago. My husband and I sat on the front steps talking about how long we saw ourselves in this home, we thought 5-7 years, well surprise surprise we're still here! Our conversation revolved around, what we wanted to do to update the home, give "her" back the beauty that she once had and where to begin.

At this point we were new homeowners, with visions, but didn't have the experience and/or knowledge to tackle the projects! We started small, fresh paint to each room, new hardware throughout the ENTIRE house. I refinished the inside of the kitchen cabinets...peeling LAYERS of contact paper off the shelves, sanding, staining & sealing.

Over the years our projects have gradually gotten bigger and more complex. From the outside demo of the entire landscape/backyard to completely gutting our upstairs bathroom, to shiplap, to board and batten...the projects continue! The sole purpose to these projects mainly to update and freshen up the space, but some to provide functionality to the space.

Our hallway closet may seem like such a small project, but the functionality of it NOW compared to a junk closet before, is by far one of my favorite projects that we have completed! I am actually kicking myself that it took me THIS LONG to get this idea and project completed!

I sit here now thinking, where did I fit all of this stuff in the kitchen cabinets before our junk closet turned into a pantry? Crazy to think how much more space it provided in the kitchen cabinets and the functionality of both spaces now just makes so much more sense!

For this pantry project it simply required some fresh white paint, the shelves we had added a few years ago as a way to store all my crockpots and "things"...I added some floral stick n peel paper to the back of the pantry just for a pop of fun and color.

The next thing was getting containers that I liked to store all the different food items. I didn't want any cardboard boxes. All items would have their own space, which also made it easier for me to see what we were running low on or needed to add to the grocery list. I found clear bins at Marshalls and slowly just added as I needed. It was such a simple update & much needed.

I wondered if I would like the pantry in the hallway, out of the kitchen, and I think it took a little getting used to, but overall it works in our small home, right next to the kitchen!

I added battery operated lights with a remote in the pantry to give it light, as it definitely was a dark closet and at night it was hard to see what was in there, once again such a simple update to the space that just made so much sense!

The finishing touch you ask? Labeling the door, of course! I purchased the "pantry" door hangar from Target to match the Bathroom sign just down the hall.

This hallway drastically changed with a simple color change. White walls, fresh white coat on ceiling. All doors went from a light golden oat color to solid white, with black painted hardware. It may not be ideal for some...but for us it is functional, practical and works perfect for our sweet home!

That's all for now.
